Hello, I’m Toini, paladin of Ek. I’m the third and the last of the protagonists in this series of stories. I have a big part to play, and I matter to the story, but I’m not the main character. My parts are there to show who I really am. What I am.
Roy’s got this idea of who I am, and it’s wrong. It’s based on who I was fifteen years ago, and he was wrong about me back then already. I was never who he thought I was, and I’ve changed a lot since then.
I’m the rude awakening. The reality check if you will.
I am that to a lot of people. I tell them the things they don’t want to hear. The things they need to hear.
Ek is the god of life and nature. I’m his mortal representative in the world. I speak for those who have no voice. Animals, plants, forests. I’m the voice of life, and I don’t compromise.
It’s not a good way to make friends.
That’s not my job though. I’m here to get the story started, keep it on track, and to end it.
Roy’s the one pushing it forward, but I’m the reason.
It’s harsh, but we all have our jobs to do.
He’ll deal. He’s been around the block a few times. He’ll figure it out. It’s just another setback. He knows those.
Me? I just want to be off again. I get what I came for and I move on. It’s what I do.
No, it’s not particularly nice.
I’m not a nice person.
Nice. Person. They’re just words. They don’t apply to me any more. I’m human in body only. The girl Toini that Roy knew. She is gone. I’m Toini, paladin of Ek. I’ve got a job to do, and no one is getting in my way.
